REPLACEMENT AIR GROUP

THE FLEET REPLACEMENT SQUADRON

Within Virtual Carrier Air Wing 17, Fleet Replacement Squadrons (FRSs), commonly referred to as “RAGs” (Replacement Air Groups), are the training squadrons responsible for qualifying aircrew prior to assignment to a fleet unit and for retraining or requalification when required.

CVW-17 operates aircraft- and role-specific RAGs. VFA-106 serves as the Hornet RAG for Student Naval Aviators. VF-101 serves as the Tomcat RAG for both Student Naval Aviators and Student Naval Flight Officers. VAW-120 serves as the Hawkeye RAG for Student Naval Flight Officers.

FRS training is syllabus-driven and divided into Core Skills (CS) and Weapon Systems (WS) phases. Core Skills establish procedural discipline and foundational proficiency. Weapon Systems training builds on that foundation and introduces tactical employment appropriate to aircraft and aircrew role.

FRS training assumes prior aircraft knowledge. Each syllabus defines prerequisite requirements, and students are expected to already understand basic aircraft systems and procedures. CVW-17 accommodates experienced virtual aviators and relies heavily on self-study. All required materials are provided, and students are expected to read, learn, and practice independently before scheduling instructor-led flights. Instructor time is used to apply and evaluate knowledge, not to introduce it.

During the first six weeks of each years workup cycle, Tuesdays and Saturdays are reserved exclusively for FRS training. After this initial phase, FRS training may continue at any time outside Tuesdays and Saturdays, subject to instructor availability. Training is conducted at an individual pace; students who require additional time may continue until all syllabus requirements are completed.

Upon completion of the FRS syllabus, aircrew are assigned to a fleet squadron within Virtual Carrier Air Wing 17 and continue training within the operational squadron construct.
